DRASTIC CHANGES

The Paranormal Washington series was not always the story you know it to be. The first book took me over eight years to write! In those eight years it went through many many revisions, as I grew up and my perspective changed, my experiences influenced the story, as it still does...But the changes that occurred in Fatal Retribution before it was published in 2011, were drastic.

2003: First off, the untitled book we know now as Fatal Retribution was not a book of paranormal urban fantasy and romance. There were no monsters, no vampires, no werewolves,  nymphs, bigfoots, barguests or gianes. Just humans.  Raina's name was Cory. Katie's name was Sarah...I can't remember the other's names. The camping trip was just a bonfire.  Drinking and drugs were involved. Cory stumbles upon a dead body in the woods....and the story got darker and more mysterious and all that jazz. My inspiration behind starting the series was to push an otherwise normal young woman to murder, cold blooded and outright. I was fascinated with psychology, criminal psychology to be more precise, and I wanted to explore the process or journey one might take from 'normal' to being capable of murder. This was my goal for the first year of writing, however that changed after I found a book in my mother's garage.

2004: It was a book about a woman who was a faerie living in the present. I can't for the life of me remember the name of the book.  It was short and full of vampires and zombies and danger.  This was the first time I'd ever read a book like this outside Interview with the Vampire or Dracula. I was intrigued by the idea of bringing all the things I loved from Mythology to present day. Growing up I was obsessed with mythology, Greek mythology more than any other, but I loved all of it.  I started incorporating monsters into the story.

2005: This is when Darkness came into being, but it wasn't the Darkness you know. Picture dense forest, deep caves and no shred of civilization, let alone civilized minds. Darkness was unnamed, because no one knew it existed.  It was evil to the core. It was a huge nest of feral vampires living in the mountains. The vampires teamed with the giane, Nenet, to lure humans into their midst with the help of Ruy, who was under a kind of hypnoses the entire time. It wasn't until I visited a small mountain town in Washington called Leavenworth, that I started playing with the idea of Darkness being not a hidden nest of the damned.

2006: I'd just met James, who would later become my husband. For the first time in my life, I was learning what love and romance felt like. Mato was born. James took me to Leavenworth, Washington, a town in the mountains that was made to resemble Germany. It's truly adorable.  Soon the unnamed nest of evil vampires became Darkness, a bustling, tourist driven, adorable Gothic/ Native American town in the mountains.

2007: I took several classes in college dealing in sociology, biology and many other ologies.....Each class gave me a brand new perspective on the world, and each one molded the story in it's own way. Because of all the sociology classes I took, I better understood the complicated dynamics within and between cultures today and in the past. Because of these classes Raina's world of human's and nonhumans became a believable tension filled salad of diversity, coexisting not always peacefully.  Because of the biology classes I took, I reviled in the prospect of expressing the way in which these nonhuman creatures might function, internally speaking. Somewhere along the way Cory became Raina, and Sarah, who was Cory's best friend, became her estranged sister, instead.

2008: The book was done, or so I thought.  It was over 600 pages, but it didn't read smoothly, there were many inconsistencies and it was just well...rubbish. I still submitted it to agencies, though. In the mean time, I had several friends and family members read it. Everyone had their own input. Take this out, move this there.   In one of the first drafts, Mato and Raina actually made love.  My mom thought that was improper because they'd only just met a few days prier and Raina was only 17 at this point. The sex scene was removed. Mom also thought the book was too long, as it contained much of what you know now as Mortal Sentry, book 2. I shortened it...

2009: No one had yet shown interest in publishing Fatal Retribution, though I must have sent out over a hundred query letters. No worries, I was busy buying my first house and getting married! I was growing up and the more I read and reread Fatal Retribution the less I connected with Raina.  I was 25 years old...she was still 17... So I aged her. I rewrote the book to reflect her new age of 21 years old.  It gave the book a more mature flavor and in doing so, let me make Raina's personality a little less whiny and scared, and a little more confident.

2010: At this point I was beginning to consider vanity publishing...but I hated the thought of dumping wads of cash into the hands of strangers and giving them any power over my baby. Of course, had anyone in the traditional publishing world given me a chance, I'd have done just that...but they would have paid me for the honor of it. Fatal Retribution didn't change much in 2010, but I did start writing Mortal Sentry...that book went through some pretty drastic changes of it's own before it was published.

2011: I'd given up on anyone believing in me or Raina. Amazon had changed the game for self publishing. I no longer had to choose between a traditional publisher taking over my book, or an expensive vanity publisher taking over my book. I had complete and utter control! Months before I published Fatal Retribution in Dec 2011, I changed the ending and Raina was on fire!

So concludes Fatal Retribution's birth, though it was just the beginning.

GENERAL DOUCHE, HARD TO UNDERSTAND

I have to internalize every character I write; baddies, goodies and even some that don't play the big roles. Last night, I had to shove the identity of a General in my head.

I sat in front of my computer for a good long while, staring at it and trying to think like a military man. I was in the J.R.O.T.C in high school, made it to first lieutenant and platoon leader. I nearly got my own command until I was mutinized...that's what happens when you try and give a girl command over a room full of boys hopped up on hormones and manly ambitions.  They took one look at me and  my stripes and freaked out!

A girl controls a platoon of men and no one bats an eye; try and give her the entire company and everyone looses their damn minds.

It was my experience with this mutiny that made General Kelley alive and kicking in my head last night...what a douche.

MY SOUL IN THE BITTER COLD

A bit from Grave Omen:

“You’ll protect them? How? With your fire, your mind powers?” he laughed. “You’re weak, you’ve always been weak and you’ll always be weak, Raina. You can’t help it. You were made that way. Not enough of any one thing to do you any good, huh? Not witch enough for magic, not elf enough for your family’s love. Hell, you’re not even a true vampire or a true demigod. You think you can beat these men? You think you can save the people you love? You can’t. They love you. They think you’re smart and powerful, but we both know that’s not true. That image they have of you is a lie. They’re all going to die for that lie, for you. You think you’re worth it?”
I couldn’t stop the tears falling down my cheeks. Everything he said were things I’d told myself over and over again every day of my life. They were thoughts that festered in my mind. They suffocated me and kept me up at night. When I was a child I had a mantra: “You’re ugly, you’re stupid and nobody likes you.” I’d say this to myself over and over again so that I wouldn’t make a fool of myself and smile, or actually believe someone if they told me I was clever or beautiful. I was taught from an early age to hate myself more than anyone. But Damon’s love, being a mom and hunting had made me think better of myself. Being good at being a mother, lover and bounty hunter gave me a thin layer of hope that acted as a shield against me, protecting me from me. But the enemy was inside. I couldn’t kill her, merely contain her. Raphael’s words were a ballistic missile that shattered that shield. I felt myself falling, crippled, debilitated. The world grew dark and I was a worthless thing. My faults were countless and I was so sorry for every damn one of them.

I originally wrote this bit about myself a year before I wrote Grave Omen...I reworded it to fit Raina, but that's me, actually....bare soul open to the bitter cold...

EASTER GIVEAWAY!

Fatal Retribution is free all weekend long!

But first, a little history.
"Ishtar, pronounced Easter, was the goddess of romance, procreation, and war in ancient Babylon.  She was the mother goddess, and the stories of her descent to the Underworld and the resurrection that followed are contained in the oldest writings that have ever been discovered. . . the Babylonian creation myth Enuma Elishand the story of Gilgamesh that scholars believe were recorded around 2,000 B.C.E."

More information here

Since Raina, the main character in Fatal Retribution, worships the goddess, it seems natural that she would want to honor her in this way.

FILLER KILLER

This started as just a facebook status, but I kept on writing and writing, so now it's a damn blog.

I've kind of sort of been falling out of love with a certain author that I grew up with.  I wont name this talented individual, I'll only say that I couldn't quite put my finger on why I was more and more annoyed with the books, more often not even buying them at all...I just read a review, however, that seemed to state quite well what I've been feeling.

This author started out writing amazing books that kept me coming back for more.  However, for the past few years more than half the books are filler; lengthy descriptions of people's appearance, paying special attention to body size and shape, and two or three long paragraphs into minor character's back stories that had nothing to do with the book's current plot whatsoever, and conversations between characters that seemed only to serve the purpose of retelling readers about past events in previous books; not that any of that information is relevant or necessary in enjoying the current book...It's filler for a desired page count...I hate that.

I used to follow this author's blog as well, and this person did pay special attention to the number of pages written in a day, always elated when the desired pages were achieved. I don't judge my own progress in terms of pages. I go by chapters. If I can write at least one chapter in a sitting, I'm well pleased with myself...Moreover, I'm pleased as pie if I can make a breakthrough in the plot even if no chapters are written. When I write, I see the story running through my mind like a movie and each chapter is one scene in that movie. Completing a chapter means the story is moving along, and if you're telling an engaging story filler is not needed. And, I think that's what's killing me. This author I so adored for so long is talented, her stories are creative and entertaining on their own.  Why does she feel the need to add so much nonsense? I can only think of two reasons.

1. The publisher is pushing a certain page count per book, so the author has a quota to meet and that in tern effects the quality of the story.
2. The author has fallen in love with the voice in her head and can no longer discern great forward moving engaging story telling, from distracting babble.

It's just annoying, that's all. Rant done. Thanks ^_^

MARKETING FOR THE DUMBEST OF DUMMIES, ME

I'm trying to crack the marketing code...

  • One of the first steps, they say, is writing a log line or elevator pitch...one or two sentences that describe your work. The sentence must hit an emotional cord and be easily remembered.
I've got this so far. Which is better: 1, 2, or 3?

1. A present day Herculean tale about a woman who must decide if she is the helpless damsel in distress or the hero. And her decision will have a massive ripple effect on her life and the lives of everyone one she knows and loves.
2. A weak outcast among outcasts is put into an extraordinary situation, and finds that she is made of tougher stuff than anyone could have guest at.
3. Raina's led a life of rejection, and failed at every attempt at success, but when tragedy hits close to home she's pushed to her breaking point. What she does next, well that's the stuff legends are made of.

They're crap. Eh...Back to the drawing board, I guess.
  • The next step in marketing feels pretty impossible to me; socializing. I recoil in dislike at the very word... I'm suppose to create some kind of email list and ask people to subscribe to my blog or whatever...arg. Like my Facebook page if you really what to hear more from me, as I regularly neglect my blog and twitter account.
  • Make it easy for people to buy your books...Done and done. Buy them here. In my three years of publishing I've found that Kindle is really the only platform I sell from.  I've had my books published through every known online marketplace, and I've sold maybe a total of three books a year outside of Amazon's kindle. It's just not worth the headache to have it available anywhere else.
  • Take full advantage of social media and know the best time to post...Well, that sounds all well and good, but I work at night and sleep during the day, so....eh, I do what I can when I can. I don't like posting tons of ads and spam and whatnot...who want's to follow my facebook and then see nothing but ads for my books? No one. If you follow my facebook, you'll likely see inspiring and geeky posts, updates on how my next book is coming along and random other BS. Twitter, Google+ and Pinterist I visit rarely. Of late, I've been trying to get more into Goodreads, though. I've joined a lot of groups that look cool! Here are some other sites to promote your book on. I've gone on them without much success...but, who knows. It might work for you.
  • GIVEAWAYS! I love giving away books. I have a note on every page of my website that says so...One free book, one honest review. Currently my facebook page is at 393 likes.  I've promised my fans that once it reaches 400 I'd do a massive giveaway! E books, bags, hats and whatnot. I've recently learned you can host giveaways through Goodreads...I'm going to have to look more into that one.
  • Put excerpts from one of your books at the end of your other books so readers feel compelled to read that one, too.
  • After that it's a whole lot of online schmoozing!  Host chats, comment on other blogs, being super friendly and introducing yourself, taking the social initiative...well, you know what, you can read about all that shit here. I'm getting anxious that talking about it. I'm not too good at that stuff...
All in all the basic theme seems to be socialize, socialize, give away free stuff, give away free stuff, socialize, socialize, give away free stuff, give away free stuff...I feel like I'm screaming, "LOVE ME, LOVE ME! WHY WON'T ANYBODY LOVE ME?!" Oh, yeah...I don't talk much, or wear the latest trends, I don't have a lot of free time or extra money. Holy shit, I'm in High School! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Not again o.O

More on this stuff later. I already have tons to think about..

SOME GREAT SHIT

A long while ago I started following a group on Goodreads.com called Lovers of Paranormal. Then, back in November I signed up for the R2R program, in which an author gives away a number of books to readers who also want to take part in the program. The catch being that they have two weeks to review the book afterward. R2R, read/two weeks/review. A great concept.  I want to hug miss Carrie something fierce for having thought it up!

Any-who, I signed up to give away 20 free copies of Fatal Retribution (kindle format only). Fatal's R2R started at the end on January and so far I've gotten some AMAZING feedback. :-) 12 people have signed up and 9 have already read and reviewed my book! ...I'm not terribly skilled at marketing, so since 2011, when I first published Fatal Retribution, the reviews have trickled in, one here and there. In fact, in 3 years I only had 11 reviews! Now I have 20! I'm definitely signing up Mortal Sentry and Grave Omen for this.  They are in SERIOUS need of attention. (FYI, if you're interested in reading any of my books for FREE in exchange for a review on Amazon, totally hit me up)

R2R (LoP) Fatal Retribution

I received a free copy, through LoP, in exchange for a review.

Welcome to a world where there are humans and non humans, all living together, just trying to get along. Well, some more so than others. Raina, a witch, elf human is just trying to keep her life going and deal with her other than perfect family, some not human, some human. One of her brothers suggest that all of the siblings get together for a nice camping trip. No harm in spending time with your loved ones, even if they don't love you back. This trip turns out to be a life changing experience; one dies, then come back, one changes and then of course Raina becomes something that cannot be, the living dead. Now, she is on a mission, to figure out how and why this happened and how best to prevent this “virus” from spreading.

“You see, “Ruy began. “There are creatures out there that are immune to the virus but they aren't humans, elves or witches, and that's all you claim to be.” That last part sounded too accusatory for my taste, too much like he thought I was lying. But, to what end?
“That's because that's all I am. I'm a mutt, like most people these days.”
“That can't be all that you are, or you would be a vampire right now,” said Nenet. “Vampirism does nothing to a creature that is immune to it. However, a combination of a creature that is immune and one that is not has unpredictable outcomes when infected. Some die on the spot, others turn, and some become as you are.”

This story was easy enough to become so absorbed in. Great read, good characters and not over the top. Loved it so much, that I got the second book. I'm really looking forward to this series!

This story was a good fun read. Plenty of action, scenes are descriptive and the characters are likeable. The book could definitely use some editing. I find things like patience for patient annoying, just try to overlook them. The main character Raina is 21, a college graduate in psychology with dysfunctional family relationships. Her parents only seem to care for their first born Tristan. Seems like a psych major would have it together a little better but I have the feeling more development will come in the next books. The book reads well as a standalone and has a conclusive ending but there is the also the promise of more to come. I’ll be reading the next installment. I was given this book in exchange for an honest review for LoP.

I was given this book in return for an honest review (lovers of paranormal LOP). I absoluetly love this book, Raina's character I loved. Diana Graves makes it very easy to fall in love with the characters from this story. There wasn't a dull moment in the storyline at all and the suspense kept me on the edge of my seat. I can't wait to read the next book in this series. Well done!

This book was a great read. I loved the story. One great aspect of this book was that the story did not follow mainstream paranormal qualities. The way the story was told was well thought out and brilliantly crafted. The characters are all unusual and perfect for this story. The way the story flowed was great. I look forward to reading more of Raina's life. A must add to your tbr list.

I received this book from the Author and Lovers of Paranormal (LOP) at Goodreads.com for an honest review.
Hook, line and sinker I am caught in the world of Raina Kirland. What an explosive story!!! The author has definitely come to the party with a well executed story with so much intrigue, lust, blood, guts, gore and so much excitement. I immediately felt for Raina, an outcast in an outcast world, where she can’t belong even where the belonging don’t belong. You are thrown into the world of pain and upheaval from the onset, with the “death” of her brothers. Raina’s world is turned upside down even more with her own problem, yet out of the chaos finds a love match with Mato that I only hope will transpire. Raina seems to finally find her own destiny and calling, but will it be at the sake of her brother Tristan. Having already lost the love of her mom who I was appalled by (dad unknown), it’s hard to understand how she has still remained with such an undeniably beautiful heart. The author managed to capture a whole new world for me, one I wish wouldn’t end.

First and foremost let me begin by stating that I received a free copy of the book from the author in exchange for my honest review (LOP R2R). Thank you

Let me start by being direct, I incorrectly selected this book from the list of LOP R2R books to be reviewed; I actually meant to select the book below it. I am so glad for my mistake; this book was amazing I finished it in 2 days. I couldn’t put it down. I wanted; I needed to know what was going to happen to Mateo and Raina. I wanted to find out every little detail about what made Raina special and discover who (or better yet what) her ancestors were.

The opening chapter was a bit confusing (since I had no clue what the book was about) and completely enthralling. I wanted to know what kind of creature was could take and defeat a group of witches and warlocks. It was both exciting and fast-moving. I really expected Nicholas to be the bad warlock that Raina would safe from a doom future, wow was I wrong (well sort of). It’s a great book that will keep your attention from chapter 1 to chapter 40.

************************warning: Spoiler Alert ********************
One of the few things I didn’t care about the book was that the story didn’t explain why Mark was so intent about finding a cure for Vampirism. It stated that Admetus had him purse a cure to save his life, but really all he had to due was kill Alcestis. He had her detain and would kill her at sunrise and he would have been free. Like I said, a minor thing in such a great book.

The rest of the book was amazing. It just left me with a few questions which I hope the next books answer. I want to know if Damon is Raina’s father and that’s why he is so protective of her? Why is Raina’s mom so nasty? How can a mother throw out her kid; only because Nicholas was a warlock and Raina is curious? Is like she can only love her kids if they are perfect, and act exactly how she wants them to, just like Tristan.

All and all a great book…

Thank you for allowing me to review it.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review by the Author and the "Lovers of Paranormal" Group on Goodreads. Thank you for this wonderful opportunity!

Fatal Retribution is a very intriguing story that pulls you in from the very beginning. I was captivated by the creativity of the storyline and all the twists and turns it took – it keeps you guessing all the way to the end!

Raina Kirkland is a mutt –a mix of witch, elf, and human– though she doesn't display good attributions for any. Her two older brothers are skilled witches and graceful elves. Her step-brother and step-sister are purely human. All the siblings go on a camping trip that turns out to be a nightmare, scarring and changing their lives forever.

“Being a witch was one step up from being a vampire and a step down from being a thieving gnome.”

“Is there a law somewhere that says all vampires have to walk like super models?”

“I can’t, I’m a virgin. Virgins don’t die.” “In my time, virgins were always the most likely to die.”

The Author did a wonderful job creating a world where all imaginable creatures live along side of humans. I immensely enjoyed this book from start to finish! It was fresh and flowed nicely. I am looking forward to the second installment!

I love how the female hero grew in this book. She started out a little unsure of herself and blossomed. I like the variety "species", it didn't leave anyone out. This book was different from mainstream, which is why I liked it so much. The characters felt real to me. The story flowed well.

Urban fantasy is a hard thing to write. A lot of times, mixing fantasy themes and incorporating them successfully into modern day life can be challenging. I am extremely happy to report author Diana Graves (awesome name, by the way) completely nailed it.

Without giving too many spoilers, Raina is a half elf/witch who struggles with magic. She can do it; however, not very well. As tragedy strikes her family, Raina has to deal with that chaos as well as other problems that arise.

…As I think about this, It’s really hard not to give too much away. Just pick it up, it’s good stuff.

As a side note, as a writer myself, I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed Diana’s narrative voice. I honestly wish I would write as well as she can. Her words danced off the page in such a graceful way, it made reading this story such a pleasure. By saying ‘she’s a wonderful writer’ is an understatement. I am thankful for the wonderful opportunity to review her work.
